Another discrepancy here harks back to Grendel's weapon immunity. While Grendel is fighting Beowulf, he is proof against steel (ll. 798-805), and even the next morning his severed hand retains this resistance (ll. 987-990), yet Beowulf is easily able to lop Grendel's head off as he lies on raest.
